Job Description

As a Utility Worker Trainee, you will assist in the operation, maintenance, and repair of city facilities and utility systems. This entry-level position focuses on developing the foundational skills necessary for advancement within the Utility Worker series. No prior experience is needed—our team will provide all the training you need.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of utility and infrastructure systems (wastewater treatment, water treatment, stormwater systems, streets, parks, and more).
  • Perform daily rounds and checks of the utility systems, maintaining accurate logbook entries.
  • Conduct basic maintenance tasks (mowing, cleaning restrooms, trash removal, general repairs).
  • Respond to service orders (repairing water line leaks, installing water meters, vehicle maintenance).
  • Adhere to safety and compliance standards, including sample collection and analysis.
  • Operate hand tools and light equipment safely, including mowers, weed trimmers, and heavy equipment like backhoes and dump trucks.
  • Assist in street maintenance, park, and cemetery upkeep, and equipment maintenance.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to obtain an Oregon driver's license.
  • Successful background and driving history check after a conditional offer of employment.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions (rain, snow, heat, cold).
  • Handle equipment and materials up to 100 pounds.
  • Move between job sites, ascend/descend ladders, and operate equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, citizens, and officials.
